Did you know the age of the tattoo can play a factor in determining how quickly it can be removed. Is it easier to remove old or new tattoos? Let’s find out.

Laser tattoo removal is great. It actually works to get remove your tattoo. If you are looking to get rid of an unwanted tattoo, you might be wondering how many sessions you are going to need.

We need to look at 8 different variables to estimate how many treatments you might need. Tattoo age is just one of them.

Old or New – The Body’s natural reaction to the ink

Have you noticed how a 20 year old tattoo looks a lot more faded compared to a 6 month old new tattoo?

This is because over time the body is trying to naturally remove the ink from your body. The body doesn’t like anything foreign in it. However the ink particles are too large for the body to handle. So whilst it will remove some of the tattoo ink, it is impossible to break it all down.

This is where laser tattoo removal comes in. The laser light is targeted onto the tattoo. The tattoo ink absorbs the laser light, and the ink particles shatter into tiny little particles. This makes it easier for the lymphatic system to eliminate the shattered ink. The lymphatic system is the body’s natural cleansing system.

A tattoo that is 20 years old will look faded. It will most likely have less in than when it was a fresh new tattoo. Thus making it easier to remove.

Sun exposure over the years

Spending time in the sun over the years may result in the tattoo fading naturally as well. The sun’s UV rays break down the ink particles ever so slowly. We are not suggesting you spend all your time in the sun to remove a tattoo. This is likely to damage your skin than work as tattoo removal.

But what we are saying is that sun exposure over the years will cause the tattoo to fade.

Let’s look at a few examples of tattoo removal. We will look at an old tattoo and and a new tattoo.

This tattoo is 25 years old. After only 6 treatments we saw some amazing fading. We only needed to do one more to remove the rest of ink and that was it.

As mentioned, tattoo age is only one factor we need to look at when estimating how many tattoo removal treatments you need to completely remove a tattoo. There are many factors we need to look at.

It’s important to note, that every individual is different and so is every tattoo. Every single person getting rid of a tattoo will have different results. Half the work is done by the laser breaking the ink down. The rest is done by the body working to break the ink down.
