Is laser tattoo removal painful? It’s one of the most common questions. But don’t worry because we have low down on all the options available when thinking about tattoo removal and pain management.

We don’t like to use the word painful. We prefer to say it feels ‘uncomfortable’ but it’s manageable. In saying that, everyone’s pain threshold is different. What you find painful may not be painful for the next person.

And the best thing is, there are pain management options out there for you. So if you think you can’t go ahead with getting rid of your unwanted tattoo, you might change your mind after this.

Skin Cooling Machine

Most laser tattoo removal clinics will use a skin cooling machine. At Goodbye Tattoos we use the Zimmer Cyro 6.

The Zimmer Cryo 6 is a skin cooling device, which minimises discomfort during a tattoo removal treatment. It provides a continuous flow of chilled air and we like to use it before, during and after a treatment. This helps reduce the risk of thermal injury. The temperature is set to around -30 C. The treated area may feel slightly heated afterwards, so the skin cooling is a nice relief.

Ice Packs

Ice packs can be used to numb the area before treatment. To numb the area before the treatment, compress the ice pack to the tattooed area for 5-10 minutes. During and after the treatment, it is advisable to use the skin cooling system, which your tattoo removal technician will most likely use. We do advise that if the area feels slightly heated and sunburnt afterward, you can apply an ice pack to the area for about 5-10 minutes to help cool the area down.

Numbing Creams

For clients that need a little extra help with pain management, numbing creams can work well to help get you through an entire treatment. Emla 5%, for example, is available over the counter, however for a more high-strength cream, you will need to see a doctor to get a prescription.

For maximum effectiveness, numbing creams need to be applied to the tattooed area for about 45 minutes before the treatment. And make sure to cover with Gladwrap for the cream to take affect. Most patients apply the cream at home before their treatment.

We like the Zensa Numbing Cream. It’s water based and PH Neutral. No harmful chemicals. It has vitamin E, an antioxidant that provides anti-inflammatory properties and boosts the healing process.

Stress Balls

This might not be an obvious tattoo removal and pain management solution, however stress balls are somewhat of a game changer. Some of the benefits of a stress ball include reducing anxiety and stress. Enhances emotional stability and increases positive energy. But last but no means the least acts as a bit of distraction. The treatment will be over before you know it!

Take a break

If during the treatment itself, you need a break, then simply tell your technician. Whilst laser tattoo removal is quick, it is dependent on the size of the tattoo. The bigger the tattoo the longer it can take, so make sure to voice how you are feeling. The tattoo removal technician will be more than happy to stop for a break to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

Sensitive time of the month

This is one for the ladies. During menstruation, your body will be more sensitive to discomfort and you may experience lower pain tolerances. Which can make a laser tattoo removal treatment unbearable. You may want to move your appointment to another day in the month. Your tattoo technician will understand.

As mentioned before, everyone’s pain threshold is different and different parts of the body are more sensitive than others. To discuss this, or if you have any other questions, get in touch with us today.
