Thinking about getting rid of that tattoo but just don’t know when is a good time? Although tattoo removal can be done throughout the year, starting your laser tattoo removal journey in winter has proven to be the most effective time. Here’s why…

Keeping it out of the sun

To have the most effective laser tattoo removal treatment, we advise our clients to stay out of the sun for a few weeks before and post-treatment. This is because the UV rays from the sun increase the production of melanin in the body. This is what causes us to tan or burn. Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the ink pigment and fragmenting the ink into tiny little pieces. If you are tanned or burnt, the laser light can’t differentiate between the darker skin pigment or ink pigment. Therefore, making the treatment ineffective and may result in needing many more treatments than expected. Also, naturally, in winter, we like to rug up and layering the clothes. Meaning less exposure of the treated area.

Avoid swimming

After a laser removal session, the treated area will feel tender and is susceptible to infections and scarring. Therefore, the aftercare procedure so important. One thing to avoid is swimming or surfing, for at least 24-48 hours. Even if the area is covered up with a gauze, it’s still prone to bacteria. We tend to visit the beach or swimming pools less in the winter, so this is a great time to start on your laser tattoo removal journey.

Make great progress by the time summer comes around again

Tattoo removal takes patience and planning. If you plan on getting into your bathers by summer, you’ll want to be making good progress with your tattoo removal. Start in the cooler months and by the time summer comes around, you won’t need as many treatments for complete removal.

No shaving

You need to give the treated area time to heal, and during this healing process, we ask our clients to avoid shaving or plucking. You wouldn’t want to cause scarring or blistering so put down those razors and tweezers. Also, in the winter, we tend to layer up to keep warm and it’s not such a big deal if we skip a day or two of shaving.
